On 30^th April  1916, 24^th Division, were holding the line at Wulverghem, south of Ypres, when, not unexpectedly,  the Germans launched a gas attack.  This was accompanied by heavy rifle and machine gun fire against most of 73Brigade  and  72Brigade, and also 76Brigade, of 3^rd Division.  In the line were 13^th Middlesex and 2^nd Leinster of 73Brigade, 8^th Royal West Surrey (Queens) and 1^st North Staffordshire of 72Brigade and 10^th Royal Welsh Fusiliers of 76 Brigade. There were many casualties, including William Austen.
